In 1960, self-taught architect, Jack Hall, designed a summer cottage overlooking Cape Cod Bay in Wellfleet, MA, for Robert Hatch, an editor of The Nation magazine and his wife Ruth. This remarkable structure was conceived as cubes in a grid matrix. Living/kitchen, bedrooms and bath are all in separate components. The shutters hoist up in summer to expose glass and screen panels. This video and still images were shot in July 2009.

Hatch Cottage is in tough shape and needs your help. Cape Cod Modern House Trust is raising funds for a preservation project to restore Hatch Cottage. Please visit for more information.
